Commonwealth Rx

CommonwealthRX was launched in 2009 in order to increase the volume of e-prescribing in Virginia.

Its vision is to improve patient safety, quality of care and cost-effectiveness through e-prescribing and medication management.   Key components will include:

  • Statewide Steering Committee and Advisory Council
  • Structure to support purchase and meaningful use of eRX
  • Ongoing technical support to prescribers

The goal of CommonwealthRX will be to move Virginia into the “Top 10 in 2010” in ranking for percentage of prescriptions that are electronic.

It is led by a Steering Committee of health care executives, pharmacists, prescribers and others who possess a shared vision of Virginia being one of the nation’s top e-prescribing states.

The roles of the Steering Committee members include:

  • Provide the senior level direction required from multiple stakeholders to assure that electronic prescribing projects and education programs are coordinated
  • Develop and oversee the broad deployment of a model for the state
  • Provide oversight and governance of all activities related to the CommonwealthRX working groups, Advisory Council, and general membership participants
  • Communicate CommonwealthRX’s mission and activities to various stakeholder communities.
  • Participate in monthly conference calls and occasional regional meetings.

The Steering Committee is comprised of the CommonwealthRX chair, Michael Matthews, Senior Advisor to the Commonwealth’s Office of Health IT, the CommonwealthRX Executive Director, and the co-chairs of the workgroups.
